NUTRIENT AND SALT BALANCES

Development projects involving a material change of land use may require nutrient and salt balances to assess the impact upon soils and receiving waters. The outputs from the water balance modelling, anticipated inputs due to development and a number of core soil parameters are key requirements for these assessments.

The core soil parameters are normally obtained by sampling and analysis of soil profiles from the development area.

Discharge effects on surface water receiving environments are commonly assessed by reference to established guidelines. However where discharge quality exceeds accepted guidelines, modelling is generally required to quantify the impact on receiving waters and to establish a return frequency for such exceedance. The modelling results are then used to develop appropriate management procedures to minimise impact to an acceptable level.
